Restoration Projects 2008

Tower ruin and saxon wing

Our guests and retreatants and our neighbours will have noticed a lot of scaffolding going up around the tower and the Saxon wing of the Abbey, and the old Oast house.

We have been blessed in receiving grants for major restoration work to the Saxon wing and tower. We have received grants from:

Getty Foundation
Colyer Ferguson Trust
English Heritage
Catenians

Work to the Tower and Saxon wing will include

  1. Repairs to the old tower
  2. Repairs to the Saxon wing, which comprises of the monastery kitchen, the novices study area, and living quarters of the community.
  3. Restoration work in the Marian Chapel ( next to the tower ruin)

Our architect is John Bailey of Thomas Ford and partners. Mr. Bailey is a specialist in historical buildings. Work began in January on the tower and Saxon Wing.

Other repairs to the Saxon wing will continue throughout the year.

One of our friends dared to climb the scaffolding to take these unusual shots of St. Mary’s Church and the village of Minster.
