Almost
It was your finger putting the finishing touches
To the world’s edge of the downs today
Wasn’t it?
Just smoothing off, satisfied, pleased
With that perfect, bold brush- stroke.
Not another touch until
Man comes, on this great white horse.
I almost saw your hand, as I turned aside,
Didn't I?
A tear-prick away, from nearly
Catching you at creation today,
Unaware you were,
Observing your own bright shadow.
It was the sliver-glimpse of you slipping through
The wildflower meadow beyond the field today
Wasn’t it?
Not quite hidden, bending down to cornflower
Poppy and daisy tracing their petals,
As a mother contours her child’s face.
You nearly caught my eye as I turned
Didn’t you?
Just a moth-wing away from nearly catching you
At creation today.
But did you know that I heard, well almost,
The swish of the hem of your garment,
As you passed by that day.
